Common questions
How do I get my runs out of the app?
Open it and export it as a GPX file. GPX is a plain, open format that every other fitness platform and mapping tool can read, and Stray writes the activity into the file, so a hike arrives as a hike. Your history is never locked in here.
How do I delete a run?
Open the run and delete it — one tap. Uninstalling Stray removes the database and every run in it. There is no separate account to close, because there was never an account.
I lost my phone. Can you recover my runs?
No, and this is the honest trade-off at the centre of the app. Runs live only on the device that recorded them, so there is no copy on a server for me to send you — I cannot see your runs at all. If your history matters to you, export the runs you care about as GPX and keep them somewhere you control.
Are my runs in my iCloud or Google backup?
No — deliberately. Stray's database is excluded from both platforms' backups, and from the phone-to-phone transfer that runs when you set up a new handset. That is checked rather than assumed: a real encrypted backup was taken and inspected, and the run database was not in it.
The flip side is the answer above: a new phone starts empty, and a backup will not bring your history back. Export what matters. On iOS the small settings file — theme, units, language, voice — is in your backup; it never contains a location.
Why don't my runs sync between my devices?
Syncing would mean uploading your runs to a server. There isn't one. Moving runs to another device means exporting them as GPX and importing them on the other side. Both ends are supported, so this is a round trip rather than a one-way export.
Does it work with no signal, or in airplane mode?
Yes. Recording uses GPS, which needs no network connection. Airplane mode makes no difference to a run.
How do offline maps work?
Download a map region before you need it, and the map then works with no connection. Downloading a region is the only time Stray makes a network request — see the privacy policy for exactly what that request contains.
Why does Stray ask for location?
To record your route while a run is active. Location is used only during a run, only after you start one, and it never leaves your device. Full detail, permission by permission, is in the privacy policy.
Why does a notification show while I'm recording?
It is what keeps the run recording while the screen is off. Dismissing it would stop the tracking.
Is there an account, a subscription, or advertising?
No account, no advertising, no third-party analytics, and nothing about you is sold or shared — there is no server to send it to.
Reporting a privacy concern
If you believe Stray is transmitting something it should not be, tell me at stray@grunt.be and I will look into it. The privacy policy sets out exactly what the app does and does not send.
